Department Overview:

The Career Exploration Center (CEC) is a part of the Office of Academic and Career Success (OACS). OACS provides central coordination and resources for the distributed undergraduate advising, learning support, and career services functions at UW–Madison.

OACS provides direct services to students through seven sub-units: the Career Exploration Center, Cross-College Advising Service, Greater University Tutoring Services, Center for Pre-Health Advising, Center for Pre-Law Advising, Undergraduate Academic Awards, and the Office of Online Student Success.

This role will primarily support the CEC. The CEC is a career advising office that supports all undergraduate students exploring majors and careers through one-on-one career advising, events, resources and more. Learn more about The Career Exploration Center at www.cec.wisc.edu.

Schedule:

Anticipated start date is January 2026. The ideal candidate will be interested in continuing in the role through at least June 2026 and potentially longer. The intern will work approximately 4-8 hours/week, with flexibility to accommodate for schedule changes across spring and summer.

General hours will be Monday-Friday between the hours of 8:30am-4:30pm, with some pre-planned evening and weekend hours (e.g. occasional attendance at campus resource fairs). Preference will be given to students who have longer periods of availability (e.g. 10am-3pm CST, etc). Work Study welcome but not required.

The Communications Intern will work in both the CEC (Ingraham Hall) and in the Middleton Building on campus, alongside the Communications Coordinator and other student staff. Some remote work may be possible as determined by the supervisor after a period of training and based on performance.

Qualifications:

- Current UW-Madison student
- Strong written and interpersonal communication skills, including capacity to work effectively with a diverse range of staff and students engaging with the offices
- Interest in communications, social media, website management, email marketing, and learning how to create communications campaigns
- Detail-oriented & creative, with the ability to work both independently & collaboratively, and proactively clarify expectations as needed
- Enjoy working independently and as part of a team

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Some experience in communications (website management, graphic design, social media) is preferred but not required! Training will also be provided.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The primary duties of this internship include developing social media content and managing communication campaigns, including writing/collecting/filming engaging content, analyzing performance metrics, and contributing to the overall growth of our online communities. Other responsibilities include designing communications materials (e.g. flyers, website, etc.) related to advising, programming, and other events.

- Work with professional Communications Coordinator to implement email campaigns, design marketing materials, plan and write articles, develop social media content, and track analytics
- Assist unit staff with projects on an as-needed basis
- Represent the offices at on-campus events, including the Student Orientation, Advising, & Registration (SOAR) resource fair and related events
- Be open to learning, enhance your professional skills, and build your UW-Madison network!
