Position Summary/Job Duties:

We are looking for physically strong, fun, hardworking, and motivated people to work as a personal care attendant downtown Madison. This is an in-home personal care job for a woman with Muscular Dystrophy. Responsibilities include getting her in and out of bed using a hoyer lift, showering, dressing, using the bathroom, preparing meals, and giving her cat love, attention, and food. More details are forthcoming in an interview. If you are a little nervous about working a hands-on job with real people, come join us to improve your confidence! No experience or license is necessary, as long as you keep an open mind and can learn on the job.

There are references from previous and current employees that we'd love to share with you!  Karen has successfully supported 85-95% of former workers with glowing letters of recommendation for grad school programs, who are now doctors, physical therapists, nurses, occupational therapists, etc.

“I worked with Karen during my last year of undergraduate school at UW-Madison. I am now finishing up graduate school at UW-Milwaukee for Speech-Language Pathology. In hindsight, Karen taught me more about interpersonal communication than I ever thought possible in a years’ time. She taught me how to professionally share opinions in a team environment, which I have relied on substantially during grad school. Working with Karen offers a challenge both physically and mentally, but has made me a better, stronger, and more competent individual in my academic, professional career and personal life. Not for quitters, but for positive females with a determination to succeed and excel.” -M Burrow

"I learned more working with Karen than I have in any other job that I have worked thus far! Karen is full of wisdom and if you keep an open mind, you can greatly develop your communication skills, ability to care for others, time management, discipline, empathy, posture, assertiveness, and many other skills. Developing these skills in undergrad helped me build a foundation that has allowed me to get into and succeed throughout medical school. My favorite part of the job was the opportunity to make a life-long friend that I look forward to reconnecting with whenever I get to return to the Madison area (or two if you count her cat, Phoebe)!" - Andrew Wolfram

"When I started working with Karen, I had no experience in caregiving whatsoever. It was challenging to overcome the learning curve, and when it was my turn to train others, I found that to be true for everyone. However, I have cherished the relationship Karen and I have developed over the years while also gaining greater insight into the world of disabilities.  Working with Karen has played a significant role in my personal growth as it has helped me mature, become resilient, and develop a greater appreciation of what it means to care for others. This experience has given me more confidence to take on future challenges as I enter med school this fall." - Taishi Ikeda
