Schedule:

20 hours per week on average, including evening/weekend hours. Flexible scheduling based on academic availability, operational need, and supervisor approval. Summer hours not available.

  • Participation in weeknight and weekend duty (this includes being actively on duty and being available to answer the duty phone). 
    • Weeknight duty (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday night) 8pm-9am.
    • Weekend duty (Friday 8pm – Saturday 8pm, Saturday 8pm – Sunday 8pm).
    • Some duty shifts may be added or altered based on departmental need, including Halloween, Mifflin, football game day, etc.
    • Duty hours worked include the time needed to conduct rounds of the building(s), submit duty logs and incident reports, and respond to duty calls. The time needed to complete these tasks varies by unit.
  • Attendance at a 2-hour weekly staff meeting is required. Staff meetings are scheduled with your supervisor and staff team around academic commitments only.
  • Attendance at regularly scheduled one on one meetings with your supervisor.  
  • Completion of various responsibilities including administrative tasks, community development, House Fellow interviews, additional meetings/trainings, and interacting with residents in formal and informal capacities.

 You must live in your assigned room.

  • Being available, present, and accessible to the floor and hall community with regularity is expected in this role.
  • You must return to your room by 2:30am when not on duty.
  • 15 approved days/nights away per semester.

 Additional Scheduling Notes:

*  (Tentative) begins August 11, 2025; move in date of August 10, 2025 (Sunday move-in, Monday start).

Break Periods: House Fellows remain on the job through the last day of all hall closings and return early for hall openings.  The residence halls will be staffed throughout the full academic calendar, including break periods.  Some staff will be needed to provide duty coverage during each break period, and this will be scheduled during the Fall 2025 semester. House Fellows will not be compensated during break period time if they are not scheduled to work. House Fellows who are working break periods will receive break duty pay, including additional compensation for University recognized holidays.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

House Fellows live in our residential communities to help prepare residents to be positively engaged on campus and beyond.  They are responsible for assisting residents in creating inclusive communities by role-modeling and teaching skills in personal development, community living, and academic success.  House Fellows are often the first point of contact for the residents in their community, responding to issues including but not limited to: safety, well-being, interpersonal conflict, community/campus involvement and University of Wisconsin System and University Housing policy.

The work outlined below tends to remain consistent.  However, duties and responsibilities are subject to change based on the needs of the Division of University Housing and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  Any shifts to your duties or responsibilities would be communicated in a timely manner.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Community Development:
    • Host activities and informal opportunities for residents to engage with one another and build cooperative  relationships.
    • Teach residents to communicate across difference and resolve interpersonal conflicts through mediation.
    • Lead House Meetings to share important information and discuss how resident behavior impacts the community at large.
    • Role model and teach positive academic habits by taking responsibility for creating an environment conducive to studying.
    • Build a community based on mutual respect by working with residents to develop and enforce shared community standards.
    • If applicable, actively support assigned learning/theme community mission through attendance at meetings and programs
  • Relationship Building:
    • Establish rapport with all residents through regular and intentional communication in-person and online.
    • Proactively seek out in-person, one-on-one conversations with residents to provide support and promote reflection and learning.
    • Support residents experiencing academic, personal, or interpersonal challenges through active listening and making referrals to hall, campus, and community resources as appropriate.
    • Be available, present, and accessible to residents by frequently spending time in assigned House Fellow room and common spaces in the community.
    • Develop a positive working relationship with University and Housing professional and student staff members
  • Safety and Security:
    • Serve in the duty rotations as assigned, including break periods. This includes coverage during Student Staff Training/Opening, Halloween, Fall Break, Winter Break, Spring Break, Mifflin, and Hall Closing.
    • Complete duty rounds with co-workers in a timely manner following all guidelines and policies outlined by your supervisor and the department.
    • Assist/lead in emergency situations. Be available for additional duty and/or outreach if needed.
    • Help maintain a safe facility and report vandalism, damage, and equipment repair needs and any custodial issues.
    • Enforce, document, and abide by University Residence Halls Contract, the Student Housing Handbook, and the University of Wisconsin System academic and non-academic policies and expectations.
  • Administration:
    • Work closely with and under the supervision of the Residence Life Coordinator(s) in the hall.  Maintain and develop frequent, regular, and open communications with the Residence Life Coordinator(s), Assistant Director(s), and other professional staff.  
    • Complete all assigned administrative tasks on time, including, but not limited to, logging resident interactions, submitting event proposals and evaluations, and completing incident reports.
    • Regularly post and maintain bulletin boards and flyers.
  • Other duties as assigned. 
    • Assist with opening and closing responsibilities.
    • Assist with Departmental or Divisional Committees, staff interviews, focus groups as needed.
    • Actively support divisional efforts and initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • All applicants must be currently enrolled and maintain enrollment through the employment period. 
  • At the time of start date, House Fellows must have completed 2 semesters of on-site college attendance, post high school. Summer school does not count as a semester. Transfer students must submit transcripts from previous institutions to reflect the 2-semester completion.
  • Must have a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA from UW-Madison at the time of application, the time of job offer, and at the end of the academic year prior to employment.  Staff are expected to maintain a 2.00 cumulative GPA minimum throughout employment.
  • During pre-employment and employment, a student staff member must abide by the University Residence Halls Contract, the Student Housing Handbook and the University of Wisconsin System academic and non-academic policies and expectations.
