Department Overview:

The Wisconsin Union, often referred to as "the heart and soul" of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has enhanced the lives of members and visitors since it was founded in 1907. Since 1928, when the doors to Memorial Union opened, the Wisconsin Union has served as the living room of the UW-Madison campus. The Union connects students, faculty, staff, members and visitors through shared cultural, social and recreational events and experiences.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

  • Gain experience planning and co-teaching Outdoor UW’s Outdoor Explorer Series (OES) 2-3 times a month during the academic year.
  • Build your portfolio developing the curriculum and lesson plans for 2-3 outdoor education classes each semester o Full-time staff will mentor you in this process.
  • Add to your resume that you played a role in developing new initiatives that help educate campus community members on outdoor skills
  • Gain real-life experience in event management and implementation as you support the logistics for multiple (public and private) classroom and outdoor educational events.
  • Be part of a team that includes full-time staff, outdoor recreation mentors, and student colleagues.
  • Add to your resume that you have experience in a well-established non-profit organization within UW-Madison.

Qualifications:

*Must be a School of Education student to qualify for this internship*

  • Prior knowledge and experience working/teaching outdoor programs
  • Collaboration and communication skills to build and refine classes multiple times with a co-instructor
  • Reliability and flexibility that allow for adapting quickly and teaching content that students request
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and refine new/existing curriculum independently

Student Status

To be eligible for the Wisconsin Union positions, you must be currently enrolled in a college, university, or highschool (at least 16). It is not permissible to hire a person as a student hourly employee if they are taking credits merely to be eligible for student hourly employment. Review UW Policy 5003- Student Hourly Employment for more information. If school is in break period (summer, spring, winter), applicants must intend to enroll in courses the following semester.
