Department Overview:

The City of Monona is located just a few miles from campus, on the southern and eastern shores of Lake Monona. Monona offers part-time, seasonal, and internship positions for students, as well as career opportunities for graduates.

This is a seasonal position with 2 session windows: 

  1. June 16 - July 17, 2025
  2. July 21 - Aug 21, 2025

****Mandatory training will be held June 12 and 13, 2025****


Hours for this position are generally afternoon shifts from 12:30pm-3:30pm for soccer and football and morning shifts from 9am-11:30am for strength/agility training but can include filling in for other shifts if available. Weekly hours will vary from 5-20, depending on availability, experience, and training.

Salary/Wage Range:

Hourly $15.00 to $20.00

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Under the leadership of Monona Parks & Recreation supervisors, the recreation program instructor helps plan and implement engaging activities for children enrolled in the Monona Parks & Recreation’s youth sports and recreation programming for ages 3-8.
 
Program instructors teach and supervise a variety of different programs, including soccer, football, baseball, strength/agility training, and/or wiffleball.  Instructors need not have expertise in any given activity but must be able to generally teach a wide variety of recreational activities. Training is provided.
  
Wage range is $15-$20 per hour based on experience, education, and qualifications. Wage is determined with the following critera:

  •   Minimal or no experience - $15/hour
  •   General education/and or experience - $16/hour
  •   Specific degree/ and or experience - $18/hour
  •   Advanced degree/ and or experience - $20(+)/hour
     *$0.25 pay increase per year or per season 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Lead, demonstrate and instruct, and supervise participants in recreation games/activities.
  2. Provide an interactive, positive, supportive, fun, and safe environment for the participants while effectively teaching provided lesson plans.
  3. Assist in the development of program curriculum and lesson plans.
  4. Maintain accurate program records including incident reports, daily attendance, and participant information.
  5. Listen and respond to questions and concerns from parents and participants, promptly report concerns to supervisor.
  6. Provide clear communication to and from supervisor, participants and parents.
  7. Inform supervisor of any problems or concerns regarding equipment, facilities, participants and/or spectators.
  8. Prepare program equipment, supplies and materials, and assist in the set up and cleanup of facilities.
  9. Attend all required meetings and trainings.
  10. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Must be eligible to work in the United States.
  • Minimum of 1+ years of working with youth/adults in a childcare/recreation setting strongly preferred but not required .
  • Must be certified in First Aid and CPR, at a minimum. These may be obtained onsite during staff training June 12-13, 2025.
  • Other certifications (e.g., Wilderness First Aid, Lifeguard, Swim Instructor, etc.) are a plus.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Must be able to respond appropriately to situations requiring First Aid and assist participants in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, injury, or weather).
  • Strong oral communication skills, and the ability to understand and effectively follow oral and written instructions.
  • Must pass a background check if over 18 and provide other forms and details.
  • Ability to travel in and around Monona to program site locations.
  • Ability to work varied hours, and to be punctual and dependable.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to use equipment that is specific to the program being taught and the ability to use first aid supplies.
  • Ability to work indoors as well as outdoors in varying weather conditions, including cold, heat and humidity, rain, wind, and sun.
  • Ability to work in noisy environments.
