Department Overview:

The City of Monona is located just a few miles from campus, on the southern and eastern shores of Lake Monona. Monona offers part-time, seasonal, and internship positions for students, as well as career opportunities for graduates.

Schedule:

Camp dates are June 16 through August 22, working an average of 30-35 hours per week; shifts will vary and will be scheduled between the hours of 7:00 am and 5:45 pm. Wednesday field trip days will be longer days. Mandatory training will be held June 12-13 and will include First Aid and CPR training if needed. Preference will be given to applicants who are able to work the entire 10 weeks of camp.

Salary/Wage Range:

Hourly $16.00 to $20.00

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Monona Parks & Recreation offers a full-day summer camp (Camp Winnequah) for children in grades 4K-4. While utilizing outdoor spaces in Monona parks, Camp Winnequah counselors oversee groups participating in program activities and ensure that campers create lasting memories and friendships. Duties include active supervision of children, leading groups in activities, behavioral management, leading counselors in training (CITs), maintaining safety, and lesson planning. All applicants should be interested in working with children of all ages and possess maturity, flexibility, strong work ethic and dependability, and the ability to have fun while working. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Deliver a fun program to campers ages 4-10.
  2. Ensure that campers know and follow safety and educational procedures during camp programs.
  3. Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in all program areas.
  4. Responsible for planning daily and weekly activities associated with their specific activity area and small group time
  5. Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, daily attendance, and participant information.
  6. Communicate with parents about participant’s experiences and report concerns to Camp Leadership
  7. Help guide Counselors-in-Training to have a deeper understanding of leadership and counseling skills.
  8. Ensure activities and groups maintain adequate coverage, subbing as needed.
  9. Identify and respond to camper behavior issues.
  10. Attending all-day Wednesday field Trips.
  11. Ensure each camper is having a positive experience, making friends and adjusting well to camp.
  12. Be responsible for the health, safety, whereabouts, and welfare of campers in general, and specifically campers assigned to your program area and group.
  13. Work cooperatively with leadership, counselors and support staff to make the summer program run safely and effectively.
  14. Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, providing support and guidance while supervising all-camp activities and camp functions.
  15. Provide ongoing program ideas.
  16. Perform other duties as they arise, including taking photographs, liaising with parents, and helping with any organizational or cleaning work.

Qualifications:

  • Must have a desire to work with and inspire children in an outdoor summer camp environment.
  • Must be at least 16 years old* as of the start of employment and eligible to work in the United States. *If you are under 16 and have previously excelled as a CIT, or you have other relevant Parks & Recreation program experience, you're eligible to apply.  Application does not guarantee hire for this position, you may be offered alternative positions. 
  • Must have experience in the development and delivery of programs and activities for a similar population.
  • A valid Wisconsin driver's license is preferred but not required.
  • Must pass a background check and provide other forms and details.
  • Must have a current certification in First Aid and CPR, at a minimum. These may be obtained onsite during staff training June 12-13.

Stand, sit, talk, hear, read and write, walk and bend; periodically reach, stoop, crouch, kneel; lift/carry/move 10–50 lbs; work in heat and humidity
