The Wisconsin Union, often referred to as "the heart and soul" of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has enhanced the lives of members and visitors since it was founded in 1907. Since 1928, when the doors to Memorial Union opened, the Wisconsin Union has served as the living room of the UW-Madison campus. The Union connects students, faculty, staff, members, and visitors through shared cultural, social, and recreational events and experiences.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Department Description:

The Center for Leadership & Involvement (CfLI) promotes student involvement, out-of-class learning experiences, and leadership skill development as an integral part of a university education. Additionally, CfLI registers a diverse array of student organizations, and provides services, information, education, support, advising, and interpretation of university policies and procedures to assist with the development and strengthening of students and student groups. The Center supports the Willis L. Jones Leadership Center (JLC), the Student Activity Center (SAC), and sponsors the Student Leadership Program (SLP). CfLI, as a department within Student Affairs, strives to provide an environment that promotes personal and professional development as part of the student employment experience

Responsibilities: 

  • Serve as a first level advisor for CfLI patrons while making appropriate referrals when necessary, including answering phones, emails, or visitor inquiries in a courteous, professional, and thorough manner
  •  Assist in completing general office duties including, but not limited to: handling mail, opening and closing of the office, checking out office equipment, completing hourly rounds and head counts, and ensuring office cleanliness
  • Support student organizations by assisting with student organization registration, room reservations, student organization offices in the SAC, card scanner and AV key check out, and interpreting student organization policies and procedures.
  • Enforce facility use policies as needed
  • Complete special projects as assigned, and assist CfLI professional staff and student coordinators as requested
  • Serve as a CfLI ambassador at the Student Organization Fairs & involvement workshops that occur throughout the year and especially at the beginning of each semester.
  • Develop and track personal and professional leadership growth via a Leadership Development Plan, with assistance from Team Leads and CfLI Staff
  • Develop and track personal and professional social justice awareness via a Social Justice Development Plan, with assistance from Team Leads and CfLI Staff
  • Attend biweekly staff meetings 
  • Attend fall and spring training days, typically held the week before the start of classes

  • Working knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office software
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patrons, staff, Team Leads, and team members
  • Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check

Student Status

To be eligible for the Wisconsin Union positions, you must be currently enrolled in a college, university, or highschool (at least 16). It is not permissible to hire a person as a student hourly employee if they are taking credits merely to be eligible for student hourly employment. Review UW Policy 5003- Student Hourly Employment for more information. If school is in break period (summer, spring, winter), applicants must intend to enroll in courses the following semester.   • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team setting
  • Organized and dependable work habits and willingness to take initiative
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 – should GPA fall below 2.0, a meeting with the staff supervisor would be required
  • Make a minimum one year commitment to the position
  • Must be a registered undergraduate or graduate student at UW-Madison at the time of hire.
  • Must be available to work night and weekend shifts
