Position Summary/Job Duties:

Department Description:

The Center for Leadership & Involvement (CfLI) promotes student involvement, out-of-class learning experiences, and leadership skill development as an integral part of a university education. Additionally, CfLI registers a diverse array of student organizations, and provides services, information, education, support, advising, and interpretation of university policies and procedures to assist with the development and strengthening of students and student groups. The Center supports the Willis L. Jones Leadership Center (JLC), the Student Activity Center (SAC), and sponsors the Student Leadership Program (SLP). CfLI, as a department within Student Affairs, strives to provide an environment that promotes personal and professional development as part of the student employment experience.

Front Desk Team Lead Responsibilities:

  • Provide primary support and supervision to Front Desk Staff. This includes answering questions, meeting individually and providing feedback to help advance the leadership development of each member.
  • Work one weeknight closing shift each week, and one weekend shift biweekly.
  • Coordinate and assist with specific projects that address the needs of CfLI.
  • Provide feedback and evaluations to Front Desk Staff and professional staff.
  • Coordinate general office duties.
  • Plan and facilitate biweekly Front Desk team meetings, in conjunction with the front desk supervisors.
  • Meet bi-weekly with a CfLI professional staff member.
  • Assist in preparing transition materials to ensure continuity and efficiency for sustained Front Desk Staff and operational success.

General Front Desk Staff Responsibilities

  • Serve as a first level advisor for CfLI patrons while making appropriate referrals when necessary, including answering phones, emails, or visitor inquiries in a courteous, professional, and thorough manner
  • Assist in completing general office duties including, but not limited to: handling mail, opening and closing of the office, checking out office equipment, completing hourly rounds and head counts, and ensuring office cleanliness
  • Support student organizations by assisting with student organization registration, room reservations, student organization offices in the SAC, card scanner check out, and interpreting student organization policies and procedures.
  • Enforce facility use policies as needed
  • Complete special projects as assigned, and assist CfLI professional staff and CfLI student coordinators as requested
  • Serve as a CfLI ambassador at the Student Organization Fairs & resource fairs that occur throughout the year and especially at the beginning of each semester.
  • Develop and track personal and professional leadership growth via a Leadership Development Plan, with assistance from Team Leads and CfLI Staff
  • Develop and track personal and professional social justice awareness via a Social Justice Development Plan, with assistance from Team Leads and CfLI Staff.
  • Attend two social justice related workshops or trainings per semester.
  • Attend biweekly staff meetings
  • Attend fall and spring training days, typically held the week before the start of classes

  • Working knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office software.

  • Ability to prioritize and manage competing priorities while focusing on attention to detail.
  • Willingness to challenge and support team members for the purpose of on-going professional development.
  • Ability to remain composed and productive during times of high stress.
  • Commitment to providing friendly, responsible service to our customers and other office staff.
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 - should GPA fall below 2.0, a meeting with a staff supervisor would be required.
  • Make a minimum one year commitment to the position
  • Must be a registered undergraduate student at UW-Madison at the time of hire
  • Must be available to work night and weekend shifts 
  • Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check

Student Status

To be eligible for the Wisconsin Union positions, you must be currently enrolled in a college, university, or highschool (at least 16). It is not permissible to hire a person as a student hourly employee if they are taking credits merely to be eligible for student hourly employment. Review UW Policy 5003- Student Hourly Employment for more information. If school is in break period (summer, spring, winter), applicants must intend to enroll in courses the following semester.
