Department Overview:

The Wisconsin Union, often referred to as "the heart" of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has enhanced the lives of members and visitors since it was founded in 1907. Since 1928, when the doors to Memorial Union opened, the Wisconsin Union has served as the living room of the UW-Madison campus. The Union connects students, faculty, staff, members and visitors through shared cultural, social and recreational events and experiences

    10 hours per week with regular schedule during business hours and occasional evening and weekend hours

    Primarily: 8 a.m.- 5 p.m.  Must be available for shifts during business hours, with some hours occurring outside of business hours due to events and other communications coverage needs. Must be available to work in-person during the summer and academic year, with the exception of academic breaks.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Use your passion for communication to make a difference as a communications associate at the Wisconsin Union. This is a paid internship. At the Union, we help our guests learn, enjoy the outdoors, connect with other community members, and so much more. This intern works closely with the communications team to write the stories of the people and places that make up the “heart of campus.” From press releases to blog posts, in this position, this Union team member gains hands-on writing experience, has the opportunity to learn about real-world communications scenarios, and builds an extensive communications portfolio. 

Duties for this important position include but are not limited to: 

  • Create compelling content through copywriting and the coordination of visual media assets.
  • Compose stories for newsletters. 
  • Assist with the maintenance of and adherence to the Union’s editorial calendar.
  • Write and edit press materials. 
  • Proofread communications pieces. 
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a strong attention to detail. Experience with content management systems and email marketing software strongly preferred. Strong editing, interviewing, and research skills. The ability to take initiative, think and work independently, and excellent judgment/problem-solving skills are vital.

Required: Must be in enrolled in college or other postsecondary institution and be majoring in communications-related field, such as strategic communications, journalism, communication arts, or marketing. Those with unrelated majors will not be considered for this role. 

Student Status

To be eligible for the Wisconsin Union positions, you must be currently enrolled in a college, university, or highschool (at least 16). It is not permissible to hire a person as a student hourly employee if they are taking credits merely to be eligible for student hourly employment. Review UW Policy 5003- Student Hourly Employment for more information. If school is in break period (summer, spring, winter), applicants must intend to enroll in courses the following semester.
