Position Summary/Job Duties:
The DCS Farm Assistants work under the direction of the DCS Farm Manager to plant, tend, and harvest the 1-acre farm plot at the Eagle Heights Community Garden, located in the Lakeshore Nature Preserve.
Responsible for preparing soil, planting, trellising, and weeding.
Complete tasks such as pest management, plant thinning, composting, mowing, and tool repair.
Harvest and deliver produce to Dining & Culinary Services using a campus vehicle.
Plant and maintain seedlings and greens in the Leopold greenhouse during fall and spring seasons.
Work independently and in partnership with fellow farm assistants to complete daily farm tasks.
Complete other tasks as assigned by members of Dining & Culinary Services
Qualifications:
Preference will be given to candidates who have experience with seeds, plants, food, or working outside.
Preferred completion of at least one year of study in the agricultural or environmental sciences.
Ability to lift up to 25lbs regularly.
Ability to reach high or bend over.
Ability to spend extended time standing, working outside in extreme hot or cold weather.
A valid unrestricted driver’s license which meets UW Risk Management standards is preferred.
