Department Overview:

The Upper Sugar River Watershed Association (Upper Sugar), a Wisconsin based non-profit organization, is seeking three part-time Conservation Outreach Field Technicians. The mission of Upper Sugar is to provide leadership for continuous resource improvement through strategic partnerships that benefit the watershed’s land, water and people. We are a grassroots, self-sustaining, 501(c)(3) non-profit conservation organization. We have a board of directors, an annual membership and are able to complete many beneficial conservation projects with funds we raise from grants, individual and corporate donors, municipalities and events. We are a hands-on project group, and disseminate information about watershed issues through our connections in local schools and numerous community partnerships. The Upper Sugar office is located at 207 E. Main Street in downtown Mt. Horeb, WI. However, work will be conducted remotely at boat launches and water access points in the Driftless Area at boat launches listed below.

Schedule:

Due to the timing of reaching our target audience, availability to work some weekends and Holidays (Memorial day and July 4th) is required. Each position goes for a suggested position duration of May 24, 2025 to September 1, 2025. Training will occur in May prior to the May 24th date. Flexible work schedule with an emphasis on working during times of high volume use of boat launches which includes weekends and some evenings and holidays (Memorial day weekend, July 4th, and labor day weekend). Flexibility around the start and end dates and weekly work schedule is possible.

Qualifications:

❏ Federal Work Study Required
❏ Interest in conservation and the outdoors.
❏ Reliability while conducting projects independently toward a team goal.
❏ Willingness to work outside in summer weather conditions in Southern Wisconsin.
❏ Reliable personal transportation to field locations

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

❏ Comfortable conducting in-person outreach and education by having conversations with boating and fishing recreationists like families and anglers in public spaces.
❏ Effective professional communicator both in person and in digital correspondence.
❏ Organization and attention to detail regarding entering monitoring data into the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources statewide database.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The main duty of these positions is outdoor work implementing Clean Boats Clean Waters boater education at boat launches by communication with folks that come to the boat landings. Other tasks include aquatic invasive species monitoring and database reporting. Data entry may be done remotely with the option to work at an office located in Mt Horeb WI. Reliable car transportation for accessing remote sites is required.
Work will be conducted at boat launches and water access points in the Driftless Area. Work Location Details: We are staffing the following 4 landings for at least 100 hours each for the season. Please note that these sites are between 30-60 minutes from Madison.

Cadiz Spring State Park - Beckman Lake
Lake Wisconsin -- Access - Moon Valley Landing Lake Wisconsin

A stipend of $300 will be paid as mileage compensation for successful completion of the grant requirements.

Physical Demands:

Moving around uneven surfaces in remote outdoor field locations at State Park and other natural area boat landings in Southern WI in the summer.
