Department Overview:

University Houses Preschool is licensed by the State of WI and accredited by the City of Madison. We share an obligation to provide high quality services for children and families, as well as to ensure high standards in teaching, research, outreach and services to the greater Madison, Middleton, and Verona areas as well as to university students, faculty and staff. Our mission and operation guidelines are in the Wisconsin’s Administrative Code DCF 251, Licensing Rules for Group Child Care Centers.

Schedule:

Invitation to teach 25 Summer Camp and Lunch Bunch may be extended, 8:15-11:45 and 11:30 - 1pm, 1-4 days/week,  MTWR (16 - 20 hrs/wk) and MTWR (1.5 - 6 hrs/wk)

Invitation to teach the 2025-26 Academic Year (late August - early June) may be extended.

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

$14.00-$17.00

Qualifications:

A Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (WDPI) license to teach Pre-K or the commitment to pursue a 4K teaching license is a requirement for this position with or without teaching experience in a City of Madison accredited play-based developmentally appropriate preschool program. The person selected for this position must possess the educational qualifications and must meet the requirements including a criminal background check of a lead teacher as outlined by Wisconsin Administrative Code, DCF 251, Licensing Rules for Group Child Care Centers. This person must have a warm, friendly personality, be sensitive to the feelings and needs of others, be able to relate well to children, and be willing to fulfill job responsibilities in accordance with UHP program philosophy. This person must be able to maintain a professional attitude towards the children, the families, parent helpers, and co-workers at all times, be able to work with his/her co-teacher in cooperation with the Director and/or Administrator, other teachers, members of the UHP Board, and all families of the school to provide a stimulating and safe environment for the children, and provide leadership within a team-teaching model. This person must be able to lift 2, 3, 4 and 5 year old children if needed up to 30 pounds

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Classroom Responsibilities

A1. Demonstrate high quality and initiative in the planning and facilitation of a daily program of care and activities for the lunch bunch classroom according to best practices in early childhood education and developmentally appropriate practice.

a. Set up (move tables when appropriate) and prepare materials (napkins, utensils, cups, and water pitcher) for lunch bunch.
b. Participate in lunch bunch daily routines and jobs as requested by fellow teachers.
c. Assist with large and small group learning activities and provide supervision and guidance to all children while they are engaged in child initiated and teacher directed activities.
d. Implement classroom’s child guidance program.
e. Assist children in areas of self-help skills (eating, dressing, toileting).
f. Assist in preparation and clean up of snack and/or lunch, as needed.

A2. Ensure the safety and well being of the children.

A3. Assist in the arrangement of space, setting and materials in the school learning environments (e.g. classroom, outdoors, etc.).

A4. Effectively observe and share information with other staff and parents regarding child’s experiences.

A5. Communicate effectively with parents on a daily basis.

Physical Demands:

Cleaning and organizing storage areas at end of each semester.

Regularly supporting and encouraging family participation in UHP activities.

Getting up and down from the floor on a continuous basis, to interact with children on their level and to helping them settle on mats during circle time.

Sitting on small chairs 12” off the floor, throughout the day.

Lifting 2, 3, 4, and 5 year old children up to 30 pounds if needed.

Bending over to wipe off low tables and floor spills.

Reaching containers from upper shelves.

Maintain vaccination for COVID-19.

Performing other duties relevant to the needs of the program, as determined cooperatively by the UHP staff, UHP Board, and Director.
