Department Overview:

The Textile Arts Center of Madison is a new nonprofit arts organization serving as a hub for the fiber arts community. TAC offers a wide variety of classes and workshops, exhibitions of contemporary fiber art, special events, and serves as a center for creative use for textile art supplies from its location on Madison's near north side.

Schedule:

Approximately 8-12 hours per week on-site at TAC (2436 Pennsylvania Avenue). Schedule will vary and will include 1-3 weekday late afternoon/evenings weekly; and 2-3 weekend days monthly.

Qualifications:

Must have reliable transportation to off-campus location at 2436 Pennsylvania Avenue in Madison. TAC is on a bus line.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

o Strong organizational and time-management skills.
o Capable of working independently.
o Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
o Comfortable talking with and working with audiences including the general public (visitors to TAC), teaching artists, workshop participants, volunteers, community partners, and other TAC staff.
o Proficiency in Microsoft Office; Google Office Suite; and other relevant software.
o Ability to multitask effectively in an environment with many possible things happening at once.
o Knowledge of and experience with fiber arts is a plus.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

ABOUT THE ROLE:
The TAC Program Assistant (PA) will provide on-site support at TAC working at TAC’s front desk and as greeter for TAC workshops and for public hours to view art exhibitions. The PA will serve as a public face for the organization during their shift, meeting teaching artists; facilitating workshop set-up and clean-up; greeting workshop participants, volunteers and supply donors; and welcoming other visitors. The PA will also assist with a variety of administrative tasks as assigned, which could include tasks related to marketing, social media, community outreach, and operational systems. The PA will also be responsible for some basic weekly cleaning.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
On-site greeter and workshop support:
• Perform TAC “opening” duties (unlocking space, turning on lights, etc.)
• Assist with setting up tables, chairs, and any equipment/tools/supplies, as needed, for workshops or other scheduled programs.
• Assist teaching artists with load-in and additional set-up, as needed. Provide support to teaching artists throughout workshop as questions/needs arise.
• Greet workshop participants and direct to workshop location.
• Greet any other visitors who may come to TAC during the shift, which could include visitors to an exhibition or supply donors.
• At close of workshop, work with teaching artist to ensure space is cleaned up (this is part of the teaching artist’s responsibility as well).
• Assist teaching artists with load-out, as needed.
• Perform TAC “closing” duties.

Administrative and Event Support:
• Assist with online or email content research and creation; drafting social media posts; supporting publicity and outreach efforts; data entry; and mailings.
• Assist with developing operational systems, including volunteer engagement and management, and supply inventory management.
• Assist with special events at TAC including exhibition opening receptions, Gallery Night events, and free Community Day events. TAC occasionally participates in off-site programs (at local community centers, neighborhood festivals, and libraries); these off-site programs could be scheduled shifts for this position as well.

Facilities:
• Light cleaning tasks could include sweeping/mopping floor, dusting, cleaning restroom, washing hand towels.

NOTE: Additional opportunities specifically related to fiber art could be available if a candidate were particularly interested and/or has existing related expertise.

Physical Demands:

o Ability to lift up to 20-40 pounds to move and set up folding tables and chairs, help artists with load-in of their supplies to the TAC facility, and help with load-in of fiber art supply and equipment donations. Some amount of set-up and/or load-in/out will be a part of nearly every shift at TAC.
