Department Overview:

Wisconsin Geological & Natural History Survey (WGNHS) Mission:
The Survey conducts earth-science surveys, field studies, and research. We provide objective scientific information about the geology, mineral resources, water resources, soil, and biology of Wisconsin. We collect, interpret, disseminate, and archive natural resource information. We communicate the results of our activities through publications, technical talks, and responses to inquiries from the public. These activities support informed decision-making by government, industry, business, and individual citizens.

Schedule:

Schedule will be flexible for the most part. Employee can do much of the work remotely. A computer and strong internet connection is needed to allow remote log in to WGNHS network. If working in the office, student can work between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm. Employee will be expected to work at least 10 hours per week during the school year.

Qualifications:

• Good written and verbal communication skills
• Attention to detail
• Knowledge and skills to effectively interact with people from different cultural backgrounds, including those associated with race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, socioeconomic status, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and other aspects of human diversity.
• Employment will require a criminal background check.
Must be a current student enrolled for credit at an academic institution.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Required
• Basic computer skills
Preferred
• Some knowledge of basic geology
• Knowledge of or interest in geography, cartography, and geographic information systems (GIS)

Position Summary/Job Duties:

• Using Quad G, an application developed in the UW Geography Department, student will georeferenced field maps (USGS quandrangles with hand-written notation), adding location coordinates to each map.

Physical Demands:

• Ability to work at a computer for 1-2 hours at a time
