Schedule:

Typical hours occur during the fall and spring semesters, with occasional opportunities to work during winter and summer breaks.

Coaches will have an average of 3-10 hours per week in the fall and spring semesters with some weekend and evening availability required. There is a required weekly meeting at Bakke Recreation + Wellbeing Center where the entire coach team will connect. Workshops, event support, group coaching, and drop-in hours are on an as-needed basis throughout the year, and the Peer Wellness Coaching team will work together to fulfill these wider campus needs.

Note: Coaches will be expected to attend a required on-campus training week from August 25-29, 2025.

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

Minimum: $17.00 Maximum: $17.00

Qualifications:

• Enrollment as a UW-Madison undergraduate or graduate student for the 2025/2026 school year
• Enthusiasm for supporting others and creating a safe and welcoming environment for coworkers and peers
• Passion for holistic approaches to health and wellbeing
• Evidenced communication, time management, leadership, organizational skills, and ability to balance responsibilities
• Demonstrated desire to learn and apply knowledge related to wellbeing, health promotion, and mental health support
• Interest in developing and delivering health promotion programming for diverse audiences
• Availability and ability to attend on-campus, late August onboarding week
• Availability and ability to support the Peer Wellness Coaching Team throughout the year by contributing to individual coaching, group coaching, drop-in hours, event representation, and presentation requests

Preferred:
• Candidates with experience teaching, coaching, counseling, and supporting others

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Are you interested in supporting UW-Madison students to reach their health and wellbeing goals? Are you an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a career in counseling, healthcare, public health, or helping others? We are hiring the next cohort of Peer Wellness Coaches to join the Rec Well team in August 2025!

Coaches will learn motivational interviewing skills to connect with and support their peers to reach personalized goals. Weekly team meetings focus on leadership development, communication skills practice, and collaborating with other coaches. Training will happen throughout employment, so no prior experience is required.

Please note: We are also hiring for Peer Wellness Educators, and students can work in both roles concurrently (see separate job posting #508567).

Peer Wellness Coaches work with individual students with flexibility to manage their own schedule. Throughout the year, coaches have a variety of additional opportunities to extend their skills and interact with the student community at events, presentations, drop-in coaching, and group coaching!

Coaches will learn motivational interviewing skills to connect with and support their peers to reach personalized goals. Weekly team meetings focus on leadership development, communication skills practice, and collaborating with other coaches on the team.

Peer Wellness Coaches work with individual students throughout the year with flexibility to create their own schedule. In the past, Peer Wellness Coaches had had a variety of additional opportunities to extend their skills and interact with the student community at events, presentations, drop-in coaching, and group coaching!

Peer Wellness Coaches at Rec Well will:
• Create a safe and inclusive space for all students
• Learn and practice skills in motivational interviewing and other evidence-based coaching practices including the stages of change, empathetic listening, self-determination theory, positive psychology, appreciative inquiry, and mindfulness
• Collaborate with the rest of the coach team to meet the student wellbeing needs of campus
• Refer students to campus and community partners when appropriate
• Complete required notes and follow-up for coaching activities and offerings
• Build knowledge about wellness topics from campus and community partners
• Develop professional relationships with students, coworkers, and campus partners
• Attend weekly team meetings throughout the fall and spring semesters
• Commit to upholding the mission, vision, and values of Rec Well on- and off-shift including diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Have or obtain a First Aid/CPR/AED certification within the first several weeks of employment. We offer CPR courses at Rec Well.
• Be a positive representative and supportive resource for students and other Peer Wellness Coaches
• Share feedback to help make the program the best it can be for UW-Madison students!

No experience as a coach is required, but interest in supporting other students’ wellbeing is a must. Undergraduate, graduate, and professional students preparing for or pursuing professions related to health and wellbeing are encouraged to apply, and students from all educational backgrounds are welcome!
