Department Overview:

The University of Wisconsin Press is a not-for-profit publisher of books and journals. Since our founding in 1936 and the publication of our first book in 1937, the press has published more than 3,000 titles. We have nearly 1,500 titles currently in print, including books of general interest (biography, fiction, natural history, poetry, photography, fishing, food, travel, etc.), scholarly books (African studies, American studies, anthropology, art, classics, environmental studies, ethnic studies, film, gay & lesbian studies, history, Jewish studies, literary criticism, Slavic studies, etc.), and regional books about Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest. The press currently publishes approximately 50-60 books per year and 12 journals, in both print and electronic formats. Our mission embodies the Wisconsin Idea by publishing work of distinction that serves the people of Wisconsin and the world. We strive to provide an environment where students can learn about academic publishing and gain valuable working skills.

Anticipated Start Date:

April/May 2025 Start date is flexible, ideally before spring semester ends, & based on student availability

Anticipated End Date (If Applicable):

Ideal candidate will be interested in staying with the office through at least Spring/Summer 2026.

Minimum: 12 Maximum: 15

Schedule:

Flexible hours between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday (no weekends or evenings). Schedule can accommodate class schedules and semester breaks/holidays. A short period of in-person training at our office in Memorial Library will be required, followed by virtual or in-person training as needed.

Qualifications:

• Ability to make a commitment for late spring 2025 to spring/summer 2026 (or beyond).
• Must be enrolled at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Excellent written English skills and command of Microsoft Word required
• Must be well organized, detail oriented, and able to work independently
• Familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style is a plus
• Open to all academic majors
• On-the-job training will be provided for all tasks

Position Summary/Job Duties:

This part-time student position supports the Editorial, Design, and Production Department in functions related to converting unedited manuscripts into finished books.

Duties may include:
• Logging in and preparing manuscript files for copyediting
• Reviewing page proofs
• Copyediting indexes
• Performing a variety of clerical tasks
