Department Overview:

The Renz Weed Science Lab in the UW - Madison Plant and Agroecosystem Sciences Department conducts research and outreach on weeds and invasive plants in natural areas and agronomic settings, such as pastures and crop systems. We are searching for an individual to work full-time (30-40 hours per week) for the summer field season (May - early September). Continued part-time employment is possible in the Fall of 2025.

Anticipated Start Date:

The position may start in late April, but hours and exact start date are flexible based on schedule.

Anticipated End Date (If Applicable):

The full-time position will end in early September but hours and exact date are flexible based on applicant's academic schedule.

Schedule:

The Research Intern will work as part of a research team. Daily schedules vary depending on tasks that need to be completed and location of field sites, and the schedule will be agreed upon ahead of time by the Research Intern, supervisor and other team members. Applicants can expect to work Monday - Friday, 8-10 hours per day, within the range of 7:30 am - 5:30 pm, for no more than 40 hours per week.

Minimum: $14.00 Maximum: $18.00

Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, applicants can be recent graduates or enrolled at an accredited institution (university, junior college, or high school) in Fall of 2025. Applicants may arrange to receive credit from their institution.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Prior knowledge of invasive species and plants of Wisconsin would be helpful but is not required.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Primary Duties (70%): Assist in Conducting Research Trials:
o Support field experiments
o Travel to field sites independently or with the team
o Assist with plot setup, treatment application, and data collection
o Use quadrats, transects, cameras, biomass harvests, and visual estimations of cover to assess treatment effects
o Accurately enter data with Excel

Secondary duties (30%): Assist with other projects within the Renz Lab:
o Assist with a variety of efforts, which may include:
o Create outreach factsheets
o Assist with outreach events for stakeholders and the public
o Process biomass and soil samples

Physical Demands:

Must be able to work outside for prolonged periods of time, possibly in adverse conditions (heat, rain, mosquitoes, etc.)
