Department Overview:

The purpose of this Intern Position is to help a postdoctoral research associate and Research Scientist on various applied and basic mycology and epidemiology projects addressing diseases and disease management of field crops (soybeans, corn, wheat, and alfalfa).

Qualifications:

• Excellent organizational skill.
• Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office.
• Ability to obtain a UW driver authorization

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Basic knowledge of laboratory (solution concentration and dilution calculations, use of
pipettes, etc).
• Flexibility of working in different environments (laboratory and field).

Position Summary/Job Duties:

• The purpose of this Intern Position is to help a postdoctoral research associate and Research Scientist on various applied and basic mycology and epidemiology projects addressing diseases and disease management of field crops (soybeans, corn, wheat, and alfalfa). The Intern is expected to primarily support laboratory research (75% of time) and field work (25% of time), travelling to research stations in Wisconsin helping with various applied field trials. Laboratory activities include DNA extraction and amplification using regular and qPCR, along with pure culturing and other mycology-based techniques. The intern will have the opportunity to learn molecular techniques for the identification of some important foliar pathogens that occur in field crops. Prior experience in molecular techniques is a plus but not required.
- The Intern is expected to primarily support laboratory research (75% of time) and field work (25% of time), travelling to research stations in Wisconsin helping with various applied field trials. • Work environment varies from field to laboratory.
• Exposure to high temperatures in the field during summer.
