Department Overview:
The Department of Ophthalmology at UW-Madison is at the forefront of groundbreaking research aimed at understanding and treating vision-related diseases. Our team is dedicated to exploring novel interventions and expanding our understanding of eye health, with a focus on conditions like age-related macular degeneration. As part of our research efforts, we work closely with animal models to investigate potential dietary impacts on AMD progression and alleviation.

Schedule:
Flexible schedule with approximately 6-8 hours per week, split across 3 sessions, one session every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, to accommodate experimental needs and student availability. This is an ideal role for students seeking a hands-on research opportunity for the summer with the possibility of extending into Fall semester.

Qualifications:
Current UW-Madison undergraduate student. Interest in biomedical research, particularly in vision sciences, physiology, or related fields. Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently. Comfortable working with small animals and/or willing to learn mouse handling techniques.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
Basic understanding of biological and experimental procedures. Ability to accurately record and organize data. Willingness to learn new skills such as experimental diet administration and animal handling. Good communication skills and teamwork orientation.
Position Summary/Job Duties:
The Undergraduate Researcher will contribute to an extramural-funded project investigating factors that alleviate or aggravate age-related macular degeneration in a mouse model of the disease. The main responsibilities include: Administering experimental diets to mice. Measuring diet consumption and recording mouse weights three times per week. Collecting, organizing, and analyzing experimental data. Training in mouse handling and ensuring ethical care of animals. Additional opportunities may arise to assist in ophthalmic research data collection and analysis, depending on your skills, time management, and enthusiasm for the field.
Physical Demands:
Ability to perform tasks that require repetitive motion, such as handling small animals and measuring food intake. Ability to lift and move experimental supplies (up to 10 pounds).
