Department Overview:

Promoting Awareness, Victim Empowerment (PAVE) is a student organization dedicated to preventing sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking through education and activism. We reach out to students through our interactive peer education workshops, volunteer and all-campus events, and awareness-raising campaigns.
Our vision is a campus community that practices healthy sexuality, expects and offers respect, and celebrates pleasure so enthusiastically that is incompatible with violence. Join us as we build a community on campus against the violence that empowers its members to be the change they want to see!

Qualifications:

- Must be currently enrolled as a student at UW-Madison
- Exceptional organizational, verbal and written skills
- Solid commitment to PAVE’s mission statement and to ending sexual/domestic violence
- Knowledge of sexual assault, dating violence, and primary violence prevention strategies
- Willing to commit necessary time to the position in order to help the organization be successful in educating and informing the student body of sexual/domestic violence current events and how they affect the Madison community at large

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

- Experience in or deep interest in writing for publication, specifically on issues of sexual/domestic violence
- Experience with word processors, spreadsheets email and desktop publishing programs essential
- Preferred knowledge of Adobe programs (Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop) or willingness to attend available trainings on these programs
- Experience responding to reporters, developing talking points and working on public awareness campaigns preferred
- Comfortable working under deadlines

Position Summary/Job Duties:

- Writes editorials responding to local events/articles regarding sexual assault and dating/domestic violence, as well as to raise awareness and advertise for PAVE events.
- Works with PAVE members to do the same.
- Uses networking tools to build/maintain relationships with campus newspapers
- Works with student papers to encourage them to write about sexual assault in a way that supports and strengthens PAVE’s message
- Follows up with individual campus media reporters to discuss appropriate reporting techniques
- Provides editorial writing tips to PAVE staff and members
- Regularly utilizes the PAVE Blog to outreach to general campus as a medium to discuss topics relating to sexual violence in popular media
- Works with the Peer Education Coordinator to ensure that information about current events in the media regarding sexual assault and dating/domestic violence is passed along to Peer Education students and discussed as appropriate
- Primary control of maintenance and updating of the PAVE website and Facebook group with important current events in the media and starts discussion forums each week or as appropriate
- Leads efforts for awareness raising campaigns
Advertisement:
- In partnership with the Campus Outreach Coordinator, promotes and advertises PAVE events
- Creates newspaper advertisements and posters to promote PAVE events and services
- In partnership with the Volunteer and Peer Education Coordinators, heightens campus’ awareness of PAVE’s programs (facilitation services, Peer Education Program, facilitation training, and volunteer opportunities)
- Works with the Campus Outreach and Peer Education Coordinators to recruit students for the Peer Education Program
- Updates PAVE website
