Department Overview:

The mission of the Department of Biomolecular Chemistry is to carry out world class research that addresses molecular mechanisms of biological processes, particularly as it relates to human disease, and to disseminate that knowledge through teaching and training of future scientists, physicians, and health science professionals. The advancement and transmission of knowledge is part of the broader mission of the School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) and the University. Additionally, BMC faculty members provide service and expert advice to the SMPH and other units of the University, and the state, nation, and world. Schedule:

3-4 hours one day with 1-2 hours the following day. Approximately every 2 weeks. Significant flexibility. While the hours are flexible, reliability is a must.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have excellent attention to detail, strong communication skills, and be able to respond to emails and calls within 24 hours. Ideal candidates will be able to work in the lab for multiple semesters. No prior experience in a research lab is required. All skills will be taught.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

It should be noted that this is not a formal research position, although several skills learned through this position can be transferred to research roles. Previous knowledge of biochemistry/molecular biology/general lab techniques is NOT expected. We will provide training as needed. Cooking experience would translate well to this position.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The responsibility includes making Drosophila media approximately once every two weeks. This includes one day of making the media (measuring ingredients, running the stirring machine, dispensing the media, and cleaning up). This will take 3-4 hours. The following day the media has to be wrapped for longer storage. This takes 1-2 hours.

Physical Demands:

Standing for extended periods of time. Lifting and moving trays.
