Department Overview:

The Office of Experiential Learning (OEL), housed within the Division for Teaching & Learning (DTL), supports over 1,700 scholars from programs such as Posse, PEOPLE, McNair, CeO, Mercile J. Lee, First Wave, and NDGNS. OEL fosters student engagement in high-impact practices (HIPs) by creating pathways and facilitating access to undergraduate research, study abroad, internship opportunities, and mentorship.

Through intentional partnerships across campus, targeted scholarship support, dynamic programming, and personalized advising, OEL connects students with accessible, hands-on learning experiences that complement and extend classroom instruction. These real-world engagements embolden students to explore the intersection of their academic interests, personal identities, and professional aspirations—enabling UW-Madison students to build meaningful networks, gain valuable skills, and clarify their career goals.

The Fund For Wisconsin Scholars (FFWS) Mentoring Program is one program that OEL has the privilege of overseeing on the UW-Madison campus. FFWS is a private, not for profit charitable foundation established in 2007 by John and Tashia Morgridge that provides need-based grants and campus support through peer mentoring to graduates of Wisconsin public high schools attending University of Wisconsin four-year colleges and universities. The Foundation is built on the belief that every person has equal value and the potential to create one’s own future and the future of our society; and that the attainment of higher education leads to improved physical and emotional health, increased moral and ethical thinking, and increased civic involvement. By providing need-based grants and peer-mentoring support, FFWS strives to reduce the financial barriers of attending college, lighten the debt that many Wisconsin students incur, and build a supportive community of scholars that thrive.
