Department Overview:

Agricultural Research Stations is part of the UW-Madison College of Ag and Life Sciences. We provide resources to facilitate applied research, student instruction, and outreach. West Madison Ag Research Station is about 8 miles west of campus, operates over 500 ac of farming systems, and has a beautiful public display garden that is enjoyed by thousands each year.

Qualifications:

Applicants must be a current/continuing undergraduate student and should have background in plant science, or horticultural related field-experience and willing to work hard every day.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

conscientious, pay close attention to detail, good communication interpersonal skills, work will with others, data collection, summary, and presentation skills.

Positions require the ability to use, or learn to use, garden tillers, lawn mowers, pumps, utility tractors, and small motorized vehicles.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Student will be expected to be reliable and dependable and take initiative with the establishment and maintenance of the annual and perennial flower programs, data collection and trial management on several vegetable species, assist with wine and table grape research and canopy management, and overall aesthetic upkeep of the grounds.

Student will also develop skills for maintaining a public garden including increasing public awareness/provide updates of the gardens on social media, maintain signage, answer visitor’s questions, provide garden tours to groups, and participate in field day activities.

Physical Demands:

Daily work is mostly outdoors, physically demanding and includes general garden maintenance: planting of annuals and perennials, weeding, dead-heading, irrigating, training and thinning plants, mulching, and more weeding
