Department Overview:

The Research Impact and Outreach office is part of the College of Engineering. Our team helps faculty communicate their research by developing proposal materials, scientific figures, outreach content, websites, and branded collateral for internal and external audiences.

We’re looking for a creative, curious student who enjoys generating ideas, learning about complex scientific topics, and building a strong design portfolio.

Qualifications:

Current UW–Madison student with at least one year of undergraduate studies remaining and pursuing a degree in Graphic Design, Life Sciences Communication, Communication Arts, Journalism, or related field. Ability to begin in summer 2026 and continue through the 2026-27 academic year. Ideally, we would like a one-year commitment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Required:
● Interest in marketing, communications, and visual storytelling
● Ability and willingness to learn technical/scientific concepts
● Strong writing and communication skills
● Experience designing and editing digital and print graphics
● Ability to work independently, manage time, and meet deadlines
●Openness to feedback and collaborative problem‑solving
● Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
● Working knowledge of Adobe Express, Illustrator, InDesign, and/or Photoshop

Preferred:
● Basic familiarity with WordPress
● Experience with science communication or science writing
● At least one year of graphic design experience (logos, digital graphics, websites)

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Responsibilities:
● Assist in the design and production of marketing materials and campaigns that inform, educate, or inspire targeted audiences
● Develop visual assets to be used in proposals, presentations, flyers, and websites
● Edit and revise existing marketing materials as needed
● Support website updates and content management

Potential Projects (Interns may select a primary focus area each semester):
● Write content for research‑related outreach materials, including articles, flyers, social media posts, and web pages
● Support website development by helping conceptualize content, write copy, create graphics, and build pages
● Collaborate with the Senior Graphic Designer to create materials that help faculty entrepreneurs communicate scientific concepts, including logos, scientific graphics, PowerPoint templates, flyers, and other collateral
● Assist in developing branding materials for research labs or centers, including visual identities, graphics, and website content that translate abstract research concepts into accessible visuals

Physical Demands:

While this role is largely sedentary and performed at a desk, it requires the ability to sit or stand while using a computer. Repetitive hand and finger motion is required. Light lifting (10-15 lbs.) may be necessary to move office supplies or files
