Department Overview:

Approved by the Board of Regents in 1970, the Department of African American Studies (formerly Afro-American Studies) is an outgrowth of the student concern for relevance in higher education which was so dramatically evidenced on many college campuses during the late 1960s. Today, the department offers a wide variety of courses leading to both undergraduate and graduate degrees and is one of the most successful programs in the country.

Schedule:

Flexible schedule with occasional scheduled events that require specific time frames. Hours available will be between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Summer hours will be available.

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

Minimum: $15.00 Maximum: $18.00

Qualifications:

Applicants must be enrolled students or have proof of enrollment. We prefer at least a commitment through May 2027, with the opportunity to extend to additional semesters if applicable.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

The ideal candidate will have:
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Organizational and time‑management abilities
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and sometimes Adobe Creative Cloud
- Ability to work independently and multi‑task
- Friendly, professional demeanor and good problem‑solving skills

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The Student Administrative and Events Assistant will work closely with the administrative team of the Department of African American Studies, supporting and contributing to daily office operations and Department organized events and marketing efforts:

- Assist with organizing physical and digital records
- Assist with keeping an organized supplies and storage room
- Assist with keeping an organized department library collection and space
- Stock and replenish office supplies in department copy and stationary area
- Manage mail pick up and distribution
- Distribute department course and programming information flyers around Campus
- Support with events logistics (ex. preparing and printing name tags, setting up resource tables, assisting with registration)
- Assist with preparing and sending personalized donor thank-you notes, letters, and postcards

Physical Demands:

Ability to work on site at Irving and Dorothy Levy Hall, 232 N Park St. where the Department of African American Studies will be located as of July. Ability to sit and work at a desk for prolonged periods of time. Ability to deliver mail between buildings. Ability to lift filing boxes. Most work will be typically performed in an interior/office work environment, but working some hours remotely can be allowed, if it falls within the student’s scope of work; working at Department organized events will be required as needed (ex. assisting at registration tables, assisting with setting up for events).
