Department Overview:

 The UW–Madison Department of Plant Pathology is a leader in research, teaching, and extension focused on plant health and sustainable agriculture. The Wisconsin Seed Potato Certification Program is housed within the department and combines plant disease diagnostics, research, tissue culture, greenhouse production, and seed potato certification. Students have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience while working alongside experienced faculty and staff.

 Work hours will vary throughout the year based on laboratory workload and program needs. Schedule will be coordinated with the supervisor.

Qualifications:

 Current UW–Madison undergraduate student.
Interest in plant pathology, biology, microbiology, horticulture, agriculture, or a related field.
Ability to follow detailed laboratory protocols and maintain accurate records.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Ability to maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment.
Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn new techniques.
Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Coursework or experience in biology, microbiology, plant pathology, or a related field.
Previous experience with basic laboratory techniques or equipment

Position Summary/Job Duties:

This position offers the opportunity to work with and learn from a dynamic team to work that makes up the Wisconsin Seed Potato Certification Diagnostic Laboratory. Applicants will be trained on and expected to perform basic lab skills such as dish washing, media making, sample labeling, lab cleaning/organizing and solution prep. In addition, the individual will learn and perform techniques such as ELISA, conventional and real-time PCR, and real-time PCR, serial dilution, and gel electrophoresis. Applicants can also participate in on-going research projects within the lab. There also is the opportunity to gain hand-on experience by working at the program's tissue culture laboratory (Middleton, WI) hydroponic greenhouses (Rhinelander, WI) depending on availability.

This position is an excellent opportunity for students interested in plant pathology, biology, microbiology, horticulture, agriculture, biotechnology, or related fields to gain valuable experience in a professional research and diagnostic laboratory.

Physical Demands:

Work is performed in a laboratory, greenhouse, and office environment. The position may require prolonged standing or sitting, frequent walking, bending, reaching, and repetitive hand movements. May occasionally lift, carry, or move materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
